Helene’s Copenhagen Darlings
Copenhagen reveals itself as a city for lovers of art, design and beauty. Over the years I have gathered my own favourite places, from grand museums and modernist houses to small streets made for lingering – places I keep returning to.
A Quiet Marvel At Frederiksborg
“GOBELIN – The Frederiksborg Tapestries” unfolds the monumental woven images that adorn the Great Hall at Frederiksborg, and each one carries an extraordinary story.
From around 1900 and across the following twenty-eight years, these grand historical scenes were recreated by some of Denmark's most visionary female entrepreneurs, driven forward by Kristiane Konstantin-Hansen. These were not weavers alone, but planners, organisers and quiet disrupters of their age, working hand in hand with the artists around them.
I love the small rebellions in the cloth: dandelions amid scenes of war, contemporary patterns slipping into time-honoured motifs. A rare experience to savour at Frederiksborg from 26 March to 6 September 2026.
Design Museum Denmark – A Brilliant Archive Collection
Designmuseum Danmark holds a special place in my heart - a place I am forever drawn back to. Set behind the elegant rococo façade of the former Royal Frederik’s Hospital, the museum has been dedicated to Danish and international design, craft and applied arts for more than 125 years.
Founded in 1890, it settled into its present home in Bredgade in 1926, and ever since its collections, archives and library have made it one of Scandinavia’s leading destinations for design history and inspiration. In the heart of the museum lies a green oasis, offering a peaceful, secluded haven away from the city's noise.
The museum's library is especially dear to me. As a young student I spent countless hours here, lost in books on textile, fashion and history of the arts. In a quiet room that lets you slip away from time and place entirely. I am honoured and proud that this design house has welcomed my rug collection into its archive.
I recommend the current exhibition “Powerful Patterns” - a sensory playfully celebration of textiles curated by Henrik Vibskov, A pure joy for anyone who, like me, finds endless wonder in a textiles and its history.
Ordrup Gård – A Nostalgic Jewel
Another place I have always been deeply drawn to is Ordrupgaard. A museum specialising in French Impressionism, with artists such as Monet, Renoir and Gauguin, as well as a significant collection of Danish art.
In my believe, the beauty lies in the contrast between French Impressionism and Danish minimalism. I especially love wandering through the park at Ordrupgaard, where the modern art appears almost naturally among the old trees, paths and open spaces. Jeppe Hein’s installations bring a sense of play to the garden, inviting children and adults to engage with the art and meet it with curiosity.
And for anyone drawn to Scandinavian minimalism and design, Finn Juhl’s world-famous house is something remarkable! A modernist “Gesamtkunstwerk” where his sculptural furniture and carefully chosen art live together in perfect harmony.
Thorvaldsen’s Museum - Enchanted By The Decorative Ceilings
In the very heart of Copenhagen, right beside Christiansborg, stands a museum I would recommend to absolutely everyone. Opened in 1848, Thorvaldsens Museum is Denmark’s first public museum and the only one in the world devoted to the great Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844).
The sculptures are magnificent, but it is the ceilings that take my breath away. Look up, and the decorative ceilings reveal a sheer explosion of colour and decorative patterns that I find endlessly captivating. I feel utterly overwhelmed each time I step into these grand, magnificent rooms. It is so glorious that the experience almost makes me laugh.
Louisiana – A Place Out Of Time
Louisiana is one of Scandinavia’s great homes for modern and contemporary art, with a collection where names such as Picasso, Giacometti and Warhol echo through the rooms.
The building itself, with its modernist architecture, is worth the visit alone – it is a place out of time. I am especially drawn by the stillness of Giacometti’s slender figures that stand against the light and the water.
This is a place I love to visit in the afternoon, when there is still time for a swim in the before settling in at the café - their cuisine is a delight, and I always go for the soup of the day.
Hotel Sanders - A Courtyard Draped In Textiles
One of my favourite places in Copenhagen, and a hotel I find endlessly chic, is Hotel Sanders – a neighbor to the Danish Royal Ballet. It combines a sense of glamour with an atmosphere that feels wonderfully intimate and cosy.
Whether enjoying cocktails with friends in the rooftop bar, relaxing in the courtyard, or spending an evening in the elegant cocktail lounge, every corner is thoughtfully designed and beautifully curated. I am especially fond of the glamorous cocktail bar, adorned with our Painted Ikat fabrics, where every detail feels perfectly dressed and decorated.
The courtyard is another special space, draped in our Needlepoint fabrics and transformed through the tactile addition of more than 100 meters of fabric suspended across the ceiling. This soft canopy adds warmth, texture, and a sensory quality to the courtyard. The result evokes an exclusive, personally curated garden retreat with a seductive cabana-like atmosphere. The textiles adorn the space with natural elegance, creating a setting that feels both luxurious and inviting.
I recommend the bikini truffle toast, that I always share with my two daughters Barbara and Silvia.
Strolling The Streets In Copenhagen
These are a few of my most cherished places, the ones I find myself returning to again and again.
For a touch of France, I love Beau Marché. A charming shop of French décor and vintage finds, where I often settle into their café for a chèvre chaud salat. Just a short stroll away lies Værnedamsvej, a little pedestrian street where Vesterbro meets Frederiksberg.
When walking the street, you almost feel like a Parisian. Here you will find vintage boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and bookshops, all gathered along one charming stretch. When the evening calls for something special, I will have dinner at Locale 21 - the best Italian cuisine in the city, with a vibe I adore.
