A Conversation with Eva Bartels

On collaboration, craftsmanship, and the spirit of Madame Blanche

What drew you to this collaboration with Helene Blanche, and how does Madame Blanche align with Bartels’ design philosophy?

What drew me to this collaboration was Helene’s sensitivity to materials. Helene approaches texture, colour, and detail with such care — a sensibility that felt deeply aligned with our approach at Bartels. When we first discussed collaborating, some years ago, it was clear that we both share a desire to slow down our design process and create timeless pieces that would endure beyond a single season. Madame Blanche is the result of that shared passion. It’s a quiet statement of luxury — a thoughtful blend of Helene’s refined textiles and our timeless silhouettes.

Craftsmanship and heritage are at the heart of this collection. How does Bartels approach these values in your creative process?

Craftsmanship is the foundation of everything we do. Working closely with artisans who truly understand construction gives us a deeper appreciation for their world — it’s an ongoing learning process, and a beautiful one. Heritage is equally important to me. Knowing that my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all worked with shoes makes me smile every day. Honouring the legacy of Bartels and respecting what came before is incredibly fulfilling. It brings a sense of responsibility, and pride- to everything we create.

What do you hope people will feel or experience when wearing Madame Blanche, and how do you see this piece fitting into today’s fashion landscape?

I hope Madame Blanche brings a sense of lightness and joy into people’s daily rhythm — that moment of looking down and being greeted by cheerful stripes.

In a fashion landscape driven by speed and constant change, these shoes are a gentle reminder to slow down, to pause, and to appreciate something made with real care.

I believe those who love pieces with personality — who enjoy feeling good in what they wear — will connect with them right away. These shoes are made to stay in your wardrobe for years, not just seasons.

Slipping into something with story and soul.
